TL;DR: Perplexity always searches and always shows its citations, which makes it the most transparent engine to optimise for. Run your buyers' questions, read the sources it cites, and get yourself onto those specific pages. That is the whole method.
Why Perplexity is the easiest to work on
Two properties:
- It searches on essentially every query. Unlike ChatGPT, it rarely answers from memory alone, so retrieval-based tactics always apply.
- It shows its sources. No inference required, the pages that decided the answer are listed.
If you want a fast feedback loop, start here. Wins usually transfer to other engines because the retrieved source set overlaps heavily.
The method
Step 1: run your questions
Twenty commercial questions your buyers ask. Record who is named and, more importantly, every source cited.
Step 2: rank the sources
Aggregate across all twenty. You will typically find eight to fifteen domains supplying most of the citations: a Reddit thread or two, a review platform category page, several roundup listicles, sometimes a YouTube video.
That list is your actual target. Not "build authority", get onto those pages.
Step 3: assess your presence on each
For each source, one of three states:
| State | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Not present | You are not on the page | Get added |
| Weak | Mentioned in passing, or few reviews | Strengthen |
| Strong | Prominently featured | Maintain |
Step 4: close them in value order
- Listicles, email the author. A specific, factual pitch about why you belong in a piece they already wrote works more often than people expect.
- Review platforms, get review count up. Nothing else moves them.
- Reddit, one genuinely useful comment, disclosed. Never more than one thread a week, never in subreddits that ban self-promotion. Reddit punishes the alternative, publicly.
- Directories, only ones that actually appear in your citations. A generic blast to 200 directories is noise.
- Your own content, worth it here, because Perplexity always searches. Answer-first, tables, direct FAQ headings.
What does not work
Domain authority plays. Perplexity is retrieving pages relevant to a specific question; a strong domain with no relevant page loses to a weak domain with the right one.
First-person view
The reason I would start with Perplexity even if your buyers do not use it much: the transparency turns a guessing game into a to-do list. The source list you build here is roughly the same one that governs ChatGPT, you just cannot see it as directly there.
Key takeaways
| Step | Output |
|---|---|
| Run your questions | Raw answers plus citations |
| Aggregate sources | 8–15 domains that decide everything |
| Assess presence | Not present / weak / strong |
| Close in value order | A concrete placement queue |
FAQ
How often should I re-check?
Monthly. The source set is more stable than the answers.
Does Perplexity have a submission process?
No. You get cited by being on pages worth citing.
Do the wins transfer to ChatGPT?
Substantially, yes, the retrieved source sets overlap heavily for the same question.
